Central theme:

Knowledge Society and Communication:
Critical Reflections from Latin America

The purpose of the Congress of the Latin American Association of Communication Researchers is to continue contributing to the construction of the field of communication knowledge. Through the participation of papers that represent the production of a broad and diverse academia, representing the main institutions of higher education in Latin America, we seek once again to become a forum for reflection and analysis.
We also seek to strengthen these ALAIC congresses as a space for the exchange and generation of ideas that will result in joint regional work, foster the creation of knowledge networks and personal or institutional links that will contribute to increasingly enrich communication. On this occasion, thinking about the knowledge society linked to our field offers us the possibility of deploying multiple views on a complex and multidimensional phenomenon.
Central Theme

The knowledge society is traversed in its primary activities by communicative processes. It is presented as a type of social organization whose basic capital is collective intelligence, factors that undergo constant evaluation to the extent that they affect various activities in society. This intangible of intelligence enhances the reality in which it unfolds. However, is the use of this intellectual synergy the same for all? Are societies in equal conditions to take advantage of these advantages for the benefit of their citizens and the development of nations?

A model focused on the distribution of intelligence to enhance different aspects of social life should start from similar conditions, not only among nations but also among regions and citizens of the same country. As we know, this is not so; Hence, this model recognizes the existence of gaps both in technological access and in access to education, its central drivers. Although global, regional and national efforts have been made to overcome these gaps, the knowledge society model is based on historical inequities that are difficult to overcome in the short term.

Its theoretical conditions are, then, different from the realities in which the model seeks to implement. Societies have deep gaps and problems of access to education, health, equitable income to meet the basic needs of life. In its origins, the knowledge society model based its expectations on access to digital technology, but reality has shown that technodeterminism does not lead to magical solutions or to overcome inequalities.
It is in this context that the XIII Congress of ALAIC "Society of knowledge and communication: critical reflections from Latin America", places the subject under an analytical gaze that allows discovering the challenges that each national environment presents in the process of building the society of the knowledge. The aspects to develop critical thinking on the subject are diverse and go beyond conferences, panels and Working Groups, to situate ourselves in a personal environment that is involved with this change of great magnitude such as that of the knowledge society.

Themes

The thematic axes to think about the knowledge society, as has been said, are multiple and diverse. In all cases we seek to place them from the perspective of communication and resolve questions such as:
What role does education play in reflections on this type of society that places knowledge at its nerve center?
How to measure the development of knowledge societies in terms of communication between the different countries of the region?
How to go from the simple measurement of indicators of technological access to knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social practices that are generated in this type of society?
What place do public science and technology policies occupy in a societal model such as the one we are analyzing?
What is the role that national States should play in the face of a knowledge society model built on the strong intervention of the private industrial and service sectors?
What decisions should be made to avoid the indiscriminate advance of private capital and the occupation of highly profitable spaces economically, but limited in terms of the social benefits they provide?
Where do we place the field of communication knowledge and the numerous forms of social mediation in which they embody products and practices of the knowledge society?
What kind of reflections should we face in this congress to address these and other questions?
