Work Plan 2018 - 2020

Proposals

1. REGIONAL CHAPTERS:

Although the ALAIC statute opens up this possibility, they have had almost no life until now. We intend to promote its active operation, with actions such as regional events, special dossiers in the ALAIC magazine and others that they themselves determine. In this sense, we have already advanced conversations with colleagues from the four regions (Andean Region, Central America and Mexico, Caribbean and Southern Cone) willing to give a first impulse to the dialogue between researchers to generate their own work agenda and shared actions with the partners and the Board of Directors.

2. THEMATIC GROUPS:

they will continue to be at the heart of ALAIC. But there we have a double challenge: how to give it continuity beyond the congresses -as some groups already achieve- and how, at the same time, facilitate its continuous renewal, avoiding that the current repertoire of groups does not account for new issues and emerging problems. . After the challenges of the review process that is underway and we hope will culminate in the next congress, we will propose spaces for dialogue with and between the coordinators to strengthen their articulated work and that of the groups. Virtual meetings, which have now become more viable and necessary, will be a good way to periodically hold them. We will also promote the creation of a space for each GT on the ALAIC website, to host their past and current production, as well as other materials of interest to each group.

3. SUMMER SCHOOL:

This experience has been consolidating itself as one of the richest spaces for learning and exchange for the thesis students and teachers from everywhere who participate, the network of universities involved and those that organize each edition locally. Brasilia, Córdoba, Montevideo, La Paz and Lima welcomed the initiative created in 2014 and seven editions have already been completed. We hope to give it continuity, looking for creative and innovative ways in case travel remains restricted for a while longer, aware that, in this case perhaps more than in any other, the face-to-face meeting and the shared party are an irreplaceable part of the fabric of links that the School has been building and we hope to recover and maintain.

4. RESEARCH EXCHANGES:

We propose to generate a system of exchanges between researchers from different countries, with physical transfers or virtual work depending on the circumstances and possibilities. ALAIC would provide the academic guarantee framework based on the selection of proposals, managing support from entities that can provide financial resources, starting with the universities or research centers of the researchers themselves. We think of three lines of proposals: young researchers during the completion of their theses or postdoctoral studies, comparative or joint research projects between teams from two or more countries, and visits by experienced researchers for processes of evaluation and improvement of the quality of the research in areas considered weak and/or with potential for development in a country or research center.

5. RESEARCH PROJECT COMPETITION:

We will seek financial support for at least one project per year. The call will point to projects that explore a topic of special relevance and/or current affairs with the participation of researchers from various countries in the region.

6. YOUNG RESEARCHERS:

In addition to the Summer School (EV), which has been a great stimulus for researchers in training, we want to promote other activities such as:

  • Pasantías previas o posteriores a la Escuela para tesistas seleccionados, en articulación con las líneas de intercambios y apoyado en la red de universidades de la EV.
  • Espacios propios en los congresos y seminarios de ALAIC, como ya ha sucedido algunas veces, pero de modo más sistemático y a partir de los que puede constituirse un espacio permanente de intercambio y apoyo.
  • Una sección de la revista de ALAIC para recepción de artículos de jóvenes investigadores, fija o rotativa con los dossiers regionales.
7. ALAIC AWARD FOR MASTER'S AND DOCTORATE THESIS:

We propose to hold a call every two years, with prior selection by country and an international jury for the final selection. We will seek financial support so that the winners have the expenses paid to participate in the ALAIC congresses, where they can present their work and receive the corresponding recognition.

8. VIRTUAL EVENTS:

We will promote the holding of videoconferences or virtual panels on specific emerging topics by renowned researchers from the region or the world. The generated content will be available in its own channel and accessible from the Virtual Library.

9. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

We will seek to maintain and deepen the links that we have historically had with the associations of each of the Latin American countries and with entities such as IAMCR, CLACSO, CONFIBERCOM, and regional and global institutions such as UNESCO. The joint panels in congresses of the different entities and the shared publications are a path already started that can now be extended to the new virtual meeting modalities.

10. ACADEMIC PUBLICATIONS:

We currently have the historic Latin American Journal of Communication Sciences, which publishes articles in Spanish and Portuguese, and the most recent Journal of Latin American Communication Research, with texts in English. We want to promote these initiatives with a greater articulation between both and a collective work based on the local teams that have been supporting them with their careful dedication and other colleagues willing to collaborate, to consolidate and expand their academic recognition and their regional and extra-regional diffusion.

11. VIRTUAL LIBRARY:

We want to promote and enhance this repository of historical and current content, which is accessed through the ALAIC website. For this we hope, on the one hand, to strengthen the team by adding technical support for the organization of information, stimulate the provision of content from the thematic groups and regions and diversify them from the audiovisual record of face-to-face and virtual ALAIC activities. We will also promote a more decentralized management, enabling partners, groups and regions to send materials that, after academic quality control and bibliographic organization, become available on the site with appropriate free use licenses.

12. A NEW ORGANIC AND ACADEMIC OPERATION:

We will consolidate the regular functioning of the Board of Directors with monthly virtual meetings and we will add biannual meetings of the extended Board of Directors with the participation of other key actors of the Association. In principle, we think of the Consultative Council, the coordinators of the thematic groups, the referents of the regional chapters and, in case of consolidation, one or more referents of the young researchers. Special invitations may also be made, for example to the editorial board of the journal or the Virtual Library team.Por otro lado y más allá de su modalidad virtual o presencial, queremos también repensar los congresos y seminarios para que, junto a la presentación y debate de trabajos individuales, sean también espacios de construcción colectiva de conocimientos. Los talleres incorporados en los últimos años han sido un avance en esa dirección, que es posible extender hacia los propios grupos temáticos y a otras formas de encuentro, diálogo y producción.

13. CONTINUOUS INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION:

We have made progress in regular communication with partners and the academic community in general through the ALAIC website and newsletter. We want to continue this work, solve some web security problems and begin to build more dialogic digital communication spaces, especially with and between the most active members who hold responsibilities in various areas (GT, regional, etc.).

14. DIGITAL CONGRESS AND SEMINAR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Digital management system for congresses and seminars. We will begin the implementation of a management system like the ones that are usually used in academic events and that ALAIC has not yet used. We will do it on one of the available open source systems, with the adaptations of the case. We will seek with them to simplify, order and reduce errors in the sending, receiving, selection and publication of summaries and papers, among other tasks that usually require a lot of time for WG coordinators and local organizers.

15. INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP AND IMPROVEMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT:

Historically, we have had difficulties keeping members who join ALAIC, begin to pay their annual membership and then do not maintain it, largely due to the lack of an adequate and simple system that remembers and facilitates payment. We will seek to solve it, relying on a small but efficient administrative team, led by the Administrative Department and articulated with the Communication Department, in order to make the benefits of being associated with ALAIC more visible and accessible and keep the annuity up to date.

2018 ALAIC Elections

The team making this proposal is made up of colleagues who have been involved in the management of ALAIC for a long time and others who have joined more recently or are joining on this occasion. It is therefore an expression of continuity, but also of continuous renewal. We feel we are heirs of a very rich history of contribution and commitment to Latin American communication, and we also feel the need to give it a new impulse and explore new paths together with the entire academic community that ALAIC brings together. It is in this sense that we are radical: because we start from the common root to try to find common, possible and different futures, in this time of uncertainties that we live in.

We have also sought to ensure that the team reflects and promotes geographical and gender balance. We are three women and three men from six countries and four different regions. We hope that this will help us to complement each other and enrich our work, with different views, contributions and sensitivities, with an attentive ear to what is happening in the different corners of the continent and more possibility of promoting proposals for these diverse realities.

The time of pandemic in which we have elaborated these proposals has put us before the sadness of not being able to embrace each other in our congress, but also before the challenge of creativity to meet each other in other ways. This has generated opportunities to rethink some of the ways of functioning of an organization whose members have learned, despite the geographical distances that separate them, to work and stay close to debate, decide and build together.

This seems to us today more necessary than ever. A rigorous critical view of communication should contribute to the generation of proposals with the capacity to influence the production of knowledge, the training of communicators and media, social and political actors capable of transforming a Latin American reality as unequal and unjust as the current one, aggravated by the health, economic and social crisis that marks this 2020 and will have long-lasting repercussions. The concerns of ALAIC’s founders have renewed relevance today in a context of global hyper-information, restricted and monitored democracies and growing risks of environmental destruction.

From that history, in that context and with that horizon, we share with ALAIC members these proposals for the next two years. We know that they are ambitious and we may not be able to fully realize all of them in such a short time, but we intend to at least initiate them if we are elected.
