Editorial policy of the Latin American Association of Communication Researchers

The purpose of this document is to define ALAIC’s publishing policies in order to define a framework for action regarding the intellectual production of the association’s members, as well as distribution.

The norms and agreements explained in the following paragraphs apply to any publication that includes the Latin American Association of Communication Researchers in its credits, which must be previously endorsed by the ALAIC board of directors.

ALAIC currently has two publications. The Latin American Journal of Communication Sciences is of very high quality in both form and content, which has helped the Association to strengthen its image as a solid and prestigious research institution. ALAIC also publishes the Journal of Latin American Communication Research, published in English. For this Journal, the general ALAIC editorial standards described in this document apply.

General Provisions

To contribute to the process of construction and socialization of knowledge, promoting the publication of the work of its associates and the products of dissemination events, in printed and digital formats.

2. To create an Editorial Committee, composed of five outstanding members of the Association with no less than five years of seniority in the Association. Your duties will be as follows:

2.1 Decision on the publishability of texts.

2.2 Submission of the proposed texts to be judged by a double-blind evaluation system. Since this process requires the participation of a broad readership, ALAIC members, academics and colleagues from research and higher education institutions will be invited to participate in order to cover different areas and research topics within the field of communication. This list of readers will include both members and non-members of ALAIC.

2.3 The evaluation of the works received for an opinion shall take into account the following aspects:

2.3.1 Quality of the proposal submitted, which will be evaluated taking into account its theoretical and/or methodological soundness; writing; and clarity in its structure (objectives; bibliographic, hemerographic and digital references that allow a well-founded discussion of the topic; as well as the presentation of results) (see guidelines for the report in Annex II).

2.3.2 Generation of new knowledge.

2.3.3 Relevance of the topic according to the field of communication knowledge or the specific calls for proposals to be made.

2.3.4 Relevance and topicality of the subject matter.

3. Integration of a complete “ALAIC Digital Repository”, including both historical and current editorial productions. This action is particularly important because it seeks to gather an important part of the Association’s memory and its dissemination will contribute to strengthening its identity. For this integration, we will appeal to members who have copies of various editions, so far dispersed, to provide them to digitize them and then make them available to users of the ALAIC website. The archive will also be fed with the productions that emerge from the work of the Association.

4. The Association’s publications, in general terms, are not for profit, so authors do not receive nor will they receive payment for their intellectual contribution. However, when this condition varies, it must be resolved in the first instance by the ALAIC Editorial Committee, which will be submitted to the Steering Committee.

5. With regard to ISBN and assignment of rights, ALAIC’s editorial policy should clearly differentiate its own publications from those published through co-publications. To this end, agreements must be signed in which conditions such as the explicit assignment of rights by the authors, the dissemination to be carried out by ALAIC, and the circulation mechanisms to be implemented by the co-publishers are expressed.

6. ALAIC’s editorial production, both printed and digital, shall be subject, year by year, to the amount of the budget available for this activity. For this reason, editorial projects seeking funding from the Association must be submitted between January 1 and April 30 of each year, so that their economic viability can be evaluated first by the ALAIC Editorial Committee and then submitted to the criteria and evaluation of the Steering Committee.

7. Those editorial projects that have their own financing must follow the same guidelines: submit the proposal to the ALAIC Editorial Committee, which will then be submitted to the consideration of the Steering Committee. This presentation may take place throughout the year.

8. In printed or digital materials in which the endorsement of the Association and the use of its logo is requested, ALAIC will agree with the editors or co-publishers on the evaluation process of the materials to be published. The purpose of this agreement is to avoid a double ruling and will be based in all cases on the application of the criterion of reading by means of a double-blind system.

9. Based on these guidelines, ALAIC implements a wide distribution strategy for its editorial products, which also includes their promotion and dissemination. This distribution and promotion strategy contemplates both digital and print platforms. Within the digital platform, resources for these actions include the aforementioned “ALAIC Digital Repository”, assimilated to the Association’s website by expanding its capacity; the e-mail list of members; the integration of materials into digital networks with which agreements should be established**.

Among the digital materials to be disseminated are the proceedings of the biannual Congresses and Seminars, proposals of Working Groups with specific topics, and current communication issues. As for printed material, the number of copies to be published shall be established in each case by means of a decision of the Editorial Board in consultation with the Association’s Steering Committee. Distribution circuits (libraries, commercial or university bookstores, direct sales outlets, peer-to-peer product exchange, etc.) should also be agreed upon in each case, for which it may be necessary to establish specific agreements and arrangements.

10. Under no circumstances will ALAIC endorse an editorial project, whether printed or digital, that has not been previously submitted to the standards set forth in its editorial policy. For this purpose, Annex 2 establishes the general editorial guidelines to be followed by authors who publish under the endorsement of ALAIC.

ANNEX II – Guide for the evaluation of articles, books and other materials to be published with the endorsement of ALAIC.

1. The texts of scientific communications and articles will have a maximum length of 9 pages in DIN A4 size (21 cm x 29.7 cm) using Times New Roman font (or similar) with a size of 12 points and single spacing. The work must be typed using capital letters only for the first letters or titles, without margins or indentations, since the final style, in order to achieve a graphic unit for all works, will be determined by the editors. In practice, this corresponds to an extension of 33,000 characters (with spaces), including title, biographical summary of the author(s) with 4×4 photography (high resolution), abstract (Portuguese, Spanish and English, with a maximum of 10 lines), keywords, text, illustrations, bibliographic references and annexes.

2. All works must contain the following initial data:

Title
Names of the author(s). In the case of more than one author, designate a person in charge to whom the correspondence should be addressed.
Institution of each author (optional: data for link to the website of the institution).
Address – postal code – city – country.
E-mail / telephone and fax of the responsible author.
Brief biographical summary of the author(s), not to exceed 08 (eight) lines and the Internet electronic address of their home page (optional).
Citations within the text must be enclosed in quotation marks and then the surname(s) of the author(s), the year of publication of the work from which it was extracted, and the page on which it appears must be specified in parentheses. For example: Orozco Gómez, 1990a, p.
In this example, the letter “a” following the year of publication indicates that other works published in the same year are cited by the same author in the text. In these cases, the first letter of the alphabet (following the year of publication) must indicate the work that has been published first. This same criterion must be followed with the successive ones.
Footnotes should be automatically numbered. It is recommended that they be brief.
The bibliography used (references should be indicated in alphabetical order at the end of the text of the work).
Standard symbols and abbreviations widely accepted in the field may be used.

ANNEX II – Guide for the evaluation of articles, books and other materials to be published with the endorsement of ALAIC.

All papers sent for evaluation must comply with the following standards for publication with the endorsement of ALAIC.

1. They must be unpublished works. To specify this condition, each author must sign a letter certifying that it is a previously unpublished work.

2. They must have academic and social relevance.

3. The texts may have a variable length. In the case of articles or papers, they should not exceed 25 pages.

4. They must be presented in Arial, size 12, line spacing 1.5, margins of 3 cm. Indented paragraphs with normal separations between them (1.5 cm.).

5. The works must be sent in electronic format “.doc” (Word).

6. The files should be named as follows: in high (omitting accents), with the last name and first name of the author separated by an underscore (example: GUTIERREZ_MARISA). In the case of more than one author, a person responsible for the work must be designated to whom the correspondence will be addressed, whose surname will appear first when naming the files. If there are two authors, it will be done in the same way: GUTIERREZ_MARISA, DOMINGUEZ_JOSE. In case of more authors, only the first surnames separated by an underscore will be put, placing the first place to the person responsible for the work that has been assigned: GUTIERREZ_ DOMINGUEZ_LOPEZ_TORRES

7. All works must include the following information:

Title
Full name of the author(s)<(li>
Academic degree
Institution
Email
Curriculum vitae summarized in five lines.

8. The papers must be accompanied by a summary or abstract of no more than 300 words, as well as three keywords that identify the topic.

9. Titles and subtitles must omit numbering, they will only be written in upper and lower case letters, in Arial type 12, highlighted in bold.

10. Footnotes must follow a consecutive and unique numbering throughout the entire work.

11. The citations and references in the text and the list of final bibliographical references must follow the norms established by the APA Manual.

12. The bibliography will only include the texts cited in the work.

13. All printed, audiovisual or digital material that in its dissemination or publication bears the endorsement of ALAIC, must be previously submitted to an opinion through the evaluation system known as double-blind reading, which will be in charge of specialists in the field. ALAIC will deliver a file for the evaluation of these materials.

Any text that does not meet the above requirements will be rejected. In each case, for queries and doubts, the authors should contact the editors and coordinators of the publications endorsed by ALAIC.
